SCARBOROUGH, November 10, 2009 --- The Global Asia Studies Program, The Asian Institute, Intersections in the Humanities, and Arts & Events Programming are pleased to present a panel discussion at the University of Toronto Scarborough regarding the portrayal of Tamil-Canadian protests in public discourses over the last year. The event, entitled "Tamil-Canada in the Media Eye: Protests under Multiculturalism", brings together a range of experts and voices to discuss how the protests were portrayed by the media, and how these representations tell us something about Canadian multiculturalism. This panel is organized with the understanding that the portrayal of the protests affects all Canadians, not only Tamil-Canadians.

The following experts will be participating, and taking questions from the audience:
  • Elango Cheran, Tamil-Canadian student activist
  • Prof. Daniel Drache, Professor of Political Science at York and Associate Director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies
  • Sharmini Peries, journalist for Real News Network
  • Rajan Phillips, well-known activist and writer on Tamil and Sri Lankan affairs
  • Prof. Aparna Sundar, Assistant Professor of Politics and Public Administration at Ryerson University
This event will take place on Monday November 30, 2009 at 7:00pm. Located in the Arts & Administration Building of the University of Toronto Scarborough (1265 Military Trail), Room AA 112. Admission is free, but RSVP is recommended. For reservations and more information, the public can call 416 208-4769 or email aep[at]utsc.utoronto.ca
